When you hear the word DIVERSITY, what feelings stir up in you? Many are asking if diversity is still an enabler or if it has become a barrier in the quest towards a just and inclusive society. Certain subject-matter experts are even proposing the abandonment of the word altogether; claiming a large proportion of people experience feelings of apprehension upon hearing the word.
What about EQUITY? In contrast, experts on the topic suggest that our brains are more wired to care about equity and that being treated fairly is generally desired by most.
Let’s look at INCLUSION. Imagine needing to use the restroom while in a shopping mall. You’ve located the lift, gone up the third floor as the signs suggest, only to discover there’s a problem. You are unable to access the restroom because it is not wheelchair-friendly.
And what about BELONGING? Have you ever felt like you did not belong? Or worse, have you ever unconsciously made another person to feel like they did not belong? There’s no straightforward definition of belonging. It is a subjective word and carries a different meaning for each person. What makes person A feel like they belong, is not necessarily what makes person B feel a sense of belonging.
Beyond mere definitions and buzzwords, the vital truth is that we as humans share a common desire – to feel appreciated, seen, included, and treated with respect and fairness. What truly matters is the practical application of these principles within our organizations; allowing individuals to tangibly experience and embrace DEIB, and making it a living reality, rather than feel-good phrases we casually use.
As recruiters and headhunters, we frequently assist our clients in achieving their DEIB objectives. Most will agree that DEIB are the fundamental pillars of any thriving, innovative, and impactful organization. These elements foster an environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds can flourish, bring fresh perspectives, ideas, and skills to the table, consequently contributing to enhanced creativity, innovation, and broader impact within the organization.
You may be looking at getting your DEIB program off the ground. Here are three questions to consider:
- What are our DEIB goals as an organization?
- How do we plan to measure our progress towards these goals?
- What’s the timeline for ensuring successful implementation?
As a specialist recruitment agency, our commitment is to help build the nonprofit sector to truly reflect the rich tapestry of our diverse global community. Our mission is anchored in the desire to drive positive transformation within the sector, with DEIB playing a pivotal role in this pursuit.
Connect with us if you need assistance identifying real or perceived gaps within your organization or if you need support in developing a strategy that aligns with your unique mission and values. We’re here to support you.
